Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE)

A passing score of the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE), developed by NCBE, is an additional admission requirement to practice law in Colorado. It is a computer based test that is administered three times a year at local testing centers. For registration, test administration, and additional information about the MPRE please review NCBE’s site at https://www.ncbex.org/exams/mpre/. Please request that NCBE send a score report to Colorado when you register to take the exam. Most of the scores must be manually approved in the CiviCore application system, so please do give us some time to review the score and process compliance. A passing score on the MPRE for Colorado is 85 or higher.

All applicants applying for full-licensure admission in Colorado via On Motion, Bar Examination, or UBE Score Transfer must complete or have completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) prior to being cleared to take the oath of admission. This is a separate exam from the bar exam and is not the same as the Mandatory Practicing with Professionalism Course.

On-Motion: There are two possible methods of compliance of the MPRE requirement for On Motion applicants:

  1. Applicants licensed in another jurisdiction of the United States AND engaged in the authorized, active practice of law for 15 or more years at the time of application AND do not have any public discipline, AND previously took the MPRE for admission in another U.S. jurisdiction are not required to take the MPRE. Please provide a notice at the time of submission via the Communication Center in CiviCore that you believe you meet this requirement. This requires a manual override in the system. You do not need to provide a score report to Colorado.
  2. For other applicants under this Rule, a passing score of 85 or higher will be valid if it was achieved at an examination taken not more than five years preceding the date of your application for admission to Colorado. Please request that NCBE send a score report to Colorado.

See C.R.C.P. 203.2(5).
