From Civility to Excellence: A New Chapter for CAMP

After more than a decade as the Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program (CAMP), we are stepping into a new chapter with a new name: the Colorado Office of Attorney Professional Excellence (APEX).

Since its founding in 2013, CAMP has been a cornerstone of Colorado’s legal community. What began as a mentoring program has grown into a statewide resource for fostering strong professional relationships, promoting ethical practice, and advancing civility in the practice of law.

Over the past decade, the legal profession’s understanding of civility—and the demands of modern practice—have evolved. Civility, once viewed primarily as courtesy, is now recognized as a professional competency. It drives stronger outcomes for clients, builds trusted reputations for legal professionals, and creates healthier, more sustainable workplaces.

But civility alone is not enough. Professional excellence is the natural evolution of civility. Excellence requires more than technical skill; it is the ability to practice law with integrity, respect, and humility. It calls for a legal culture that actively supports well-being, connection, and community—creating an environment where legal professionals can thrive personally and professionally.

This is why our work has grown far beyond mentoring. Today, we support Colorado’s legal professionals through:

• Mentoring and professional development programs that strengthen connections across generations and practice areas.
• Entrepreneurship initiatives like Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice, helping lawyers build sustainable and community-focused practices.
• Well-being initiatives, such as the Colorado Well-Being Recognition Program for Legal Employers, which drives organizational change in law firms and legal organizations.
• Thought leadership and continuing legal education that prepare legal professionals for the modern challenges of practice.

While our name has changed, CAMP is not going anywhere. CAMP will continue as our flagship mentoring program, carrying forward the tradition of connecting lawyers, law students, and LLPs through meaningful relationships. What’s different is that CAMP is now one part of something larger: a broader vision of excellence that APEX represents.

As we move forward, our mission is clear: To shape the future of law and to close the gap between the ideals of the legal profession and the lived reality by empowering legal professionals with alliances, strategies, and actionable resources to achieve peak performance.

The new name—Colorado Office of Attorney Professional Excellence (APEX)—better captures the breadth of this mission. APEX will continue to serve as a trusted partner for Colorado’s lawyers, law students, LLPs, courts, and legal organizations. By fostering civility, strengthening connections, and equipping legal professionals for modern challenges, APEX is committed to shaping a future where excellence defines the practice of law in Colorado.
